The Direct Seafood Marketing Program being developed by the Port of Delcambre is receiving increased attention from lawmakers and the public. Senator Mary Landrieu who recently visited Delcambre and met with Port officials, add a page to her website that calls attention to the program. The Senator published a Daily Iberian newspaper article on her website that explained the efforts of the Port to start the new program and detailed other projects in Delcambre that seek to rebuild the community after being flooded by two hurricanes within a three year period.

  • Direct Marketing Seafood Program

The Re-Vitalization of the Shrimping industry and support for all aspects of commercial fishing out of the Port of Delcambre is serious business. It is serious because hardly anyone can make a decent living at it because of low prices, high fuel costs and it’s very hard work. As a result, the numbers of people in the business has dwindled to almost nothing. Still, many commercial seafood producers who, like farmers, have this inner passion to catch seafood for a living. The Twin Parish Port Commission (TPPC), with the help of a small army of volunteers, passed a proposition in the October 17th, 2010 special election to do something about this dire situation for our commercial seafood producers.

On May 1st, 2010 the TPPC will fund the launch a one-of-a-kind, direct marketing seafood program in the country. Guiding the TPPC will be LSU Ag Center and Sea Grant, along with the Delcambre Steering Committee and interested folks from the towns of Delcambre and Erath, and the surrounding area. The program is being created and managed by LSU Ag Center and Sea Grant who brings substantial resources and expertise to ensure that the program is a success for producers and the buying public.

With the launch of the program also comes the launch of our new Port website, which will feature the program. The TPPC has also retained the services of a professional advertising and marketing firm to build the new, state of the art website, create awareness of the program, and handle public relations.  The website will feature the producers participating in the program. Consumers will be able to register to be notified via email when the finest seafood available anywhere will be hitting the South Pier at the Port of Delcambre. The goal is to connect the producers directly with the consumer at the Port of Delcambre.

Please read the attached letter, formally announcing the program to the commercial fishing community for more information. If you would like to get involved, or register now for updates, click on the contact page and send us a note. By pulling together, we can save a very vital industry to our area and preserve a legacy for our children.
