In the aftermath of the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the cost of doing business for fishermen and seafood processors dramatically increased. With funding through a Community Development Block Grant known as the Fisheries Infrastructure Program, the Port is taking a step towards the recovery of the seafood industry in Louisiana while providing new facilities and better water access for recreational boating and the public

The project contains the following features:

  • a fishing and observation pier
  • new boat launch that allows two boats to launch at one time – another two launches are planned allowing four boats to launch or pick up at the same time
  • fixed docks, moorings, pilings that are storm resistant and provide or increase storm harbor capacity and/or safety
  • facilities to connect fishermen more closely with markets, like dockside and local public markets
  • a pavilion for for a seafood and farmers' market
